This species is very similar to banded topminnow, Fundulus cingulatus, but can be distinguished by having 5 preopercular pores and red side of head and jaws on large male (Ref. 86798). |
| Occurs in shallow, often ephemeral, water bodies, including ditches, marshes, and backwaters of sluggish creeks and small to medium rivers. Usually found near vegetation (Ref. 86798). |
