Dorsal spines (total): 10-11; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-10; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 8-8. This species is distinguished by having the following characters: pectoral fins short, usually reaching the vent, but not extending to the anal fin origin; upper and lower lips enlarged; 38-41 (mode 40) pored lateral-line scales; 12-13 (mode 12) gill rakers on the lower limb of the first branchial arch; 2nd anal spine when depressed extends to base of last anal ray or half the length of the caudal peduncle (Ref. 94655). |
Inhabits coastal waters and lagoons (Ref. 9303); on muddy or sandy bottoms to depths of 30 m and penetrates freshwater habitats in Mexico and Central America (Ref. 94655). |
