Family:  Muraenidae (Moray eels), subfamily: Muraeninae
Max. size:  90 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 5 - 24 m
Distribution:  Northwest Pacific: Taiwan and southern Japan. Southeast Pacific: Galapagos Islands.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Lives in rocky, boulder strewn areas and walls. Lurks in holes, crevices and dark recesses. Constantly opens and closes it mouth, an action required for respiration, not a threat (Ref. 5227). Despite its large size, this fish is not consumed as food (Ref. 28023).
