Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  Europe: Iberian Peninsula, in Ebro and Douro drainages, and in some northeastern headwaters of Tagus.
Diagnosis:  Lamina circularis absent. Body depth is 9-11% of SL. Dorsal origin behind or above pelvic origin.
Biology:  A short-lived species which inhabits upper and middle reaches of rivers, with shallow waters and stony bottom (Ref. 11240). Feeds mainly on aquatic invertebrates (Ref. 59043). Oviparous, with distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Matures at 1 yr of age (Ref. 59043). Is threatened due to pollution, habitat destruction and the introduction of other species (Ref. 26100, 59043).
