Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 30 - 120 m
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: Zanzibar (Tanzania) to Durban (South Africa), Madagascar and Sri Lanka; north to Okinawa, Ryukyus, south to the Arafura Sea (Ref. 9819), Australia and Fiji. Distribution in the Indian Ocean not well established.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 9-9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 20-22; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 16-18. Description: Dark olive green to bluish grey dorsally, shading to silvery white; blackish spot (about half of pupil diameter) on upper rear edge of opercle; olive grey to blackish second dorsal fin without white tip on anterior lobe (Ref. 2334, Ref. 90102). Body oblong and compressed, dorsal profile strongly convex anteriorly, ventral profile slightly convex (Ref. 90102). Breast completely scaled. LL 33-42 strong scutes (Ref. 2334, Ref. 90102). Pectoral fins falcate; 2 anal fin spines detached (Ref. 2334, Ref. 90102). Adipose eyelid well developed (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Adults inhabit coastal waters, near coral reefs and rocks. They feed on fish and crustaceans (Ref. 5213). Solitary or small groups are found in vicinity of reefs (Ref. 90102).
