Family:  Sternoptychidae (Marine hatchetfishes), subfamily: Maurolicinae
Max. size:  7.7 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 200 - 500 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: Madeira and south of the Canary Islands. Western Atlantic: Bahamas and the Caribbean Sea. Eastern Central Pacific: Hawaii.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-12; Anal soft rays: 22-25. Whitish or yellowish, with thick sprinkling of black chromatophores in alcohol (Ref. 37473).
Biology:  A pseudoceanic and benthopelagic species (Ref. 4462) found off oceanic islands and banks (Ref. 4739). Feeds on unidentified crustaceans (Ref. 4739). Spawning season unknown (Ref. 4739).
