Asia: endemic to the Jordan River drainage basin, where it is widely distributed in lakes and most tributaries. In the coastal plain of Palestine it occurs only in the Nahr al-Muqatta (Qishon River). |
Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-10; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 12-16. Elongate and compressed body. Mouth sub terminal, its cleft reaching to below the nostrils. Pharyngeal teeth 5-5, smooth and hooked. |
Found near the bottom of lakes, ponds and streams of slow-flowing water. Spawning season: January to April. |
