The absence of Alosa alosa in the Mediterranean has been ascertained in the past. Consequently, the species reported by the above authors must belong to the same genera. In particular, older authors (Erhand, 1858; Heldreich, 1878; Apostolidis, 1883, 1907; Hoffman & Jordan, 1892) probably referred to Alosa fallax nilotica, while newer ones (Whitehead et al., 1984; Fischer et al., 1987) meant Alosa alosa macedonica endemic in lake Volvi (Macedonia). Belloc (1948) cites the species Alosa pontica in the Aegean Sea, but it does not extend beyond the Black Sea (Ladiges & Vogt, 1968; Hureau & Monod, 1973; Whitehead et al., 1984, Fischer et al., 1987). |
