Cowley and Compagno (1993, Ref. 33465 in FishBase) differentiated two species of blue stingrays: Dasyatis pastinaca (Linnaeus, 1758) of the northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea and D. chrysonota from Senegal to South Africa. And for D. chrysonota, they recognize two subspecies: D. chrysonota chrysonota from central Angola to at least St. Lucia, Natal (possibly to Mozambique waters) and D. c. marmorata from Senegal, with literature records from the eastern Mediterranean, Morocco, Mauritania to Congo. |
