Etymology: Haplochromis: Greek, Haploos = single + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335);  paradoxus: From the Greek 'paradoxos', meaning 'contrary to expectation, incredible'; the species name is a double entendre, in reference to the strange appearance of the fishes, especially their strongly oblique gape and lower jaw, and to their seeming.

Issue
This species is placed in the genus Pyxichromis Greenwood, 1980 in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. Mar. 2011: Ref. 86697). We keep all the lacustrine and riverine "Haplochromine" species of the Lake Victoria catchment in the genus Haplochromis Hilgendorf, 1888 following Van Oijen et al. (1996: Ref. 12750), until a new complete taxonomic revision is published.

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 15; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 5 - 7. A haplochromine species with a strongly oblique gape and lower jaw, in connection with a pronounced concavity in the outline of the head in front of the eye (Ref. 51927). It is distinguished from other members of the genus Pyxichromis by a lower body depth (31.5-33.5% SL vs. 35-42), a lower cheek (20-24% HL vs. 24-32) and the dentition of the oral jaws consisting of bicuspid and tricuspid teeth in both jaws (Ref. 51927). Body moderately elongate (Ref. 51927). Dorsal surface of the snout near horizontal (Ref. 51927). Mouth isognathous; lips slightly thickened (Ref. 51927). Longitudinal line scales: 32-33, 20-21 upper lateral line scales and 10-12 middle lateral line scales (Ref. 51927). Cephalic lateral line pores not enlarged, pores on infraorbital bones and lachrymal moderately enlarged (Ref. 51927). Operculum fully scaled except opercular blotch, scales cycloid (Ref. 51927).
