Etymology: Cyprinella: Latin, cyprinus = carp (Ref. 45335); proserpina: Cyprinella meaning small carp, and proserpina, latinized form of Persephone (queen of the infernal regions, possibly in reference to the type locality of the Devils River) (Ref. 79012).

Freshwater; benthopelagic. Subtropical, preferred ?; 31°N - 30°N
North America: Devils River, lower Pecos River and nearby tributaries of Rio Grande in Texas, USA. Also found in Rio San Carlo (Rio Grande drainage), Coahuila, Mexico.
