Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335); burri: Named for Brooks M. Burr, an esteemed colleague of the authors and an accomplished ichthyologist, who first brought the fish to their attention (Ref. 27671).

North America: Restricted to tributaries of the upper Black River system in Missouri from its headwaters in Reynolds and from countries to where the Black River flows into the Mississippi River alluvial plain near Poplar Bluff, Butler County.
