Etymology: Bujurquina: A name created by Kullander, taken from a native Peruvian word for these cichlids, "bujurqui" or "bufurque"; 1983-1986.

Spawn up to 400 eggs on fallen leaves, which may be pulled around, possibly in reaction to predators or water level changes. Both parents defend the eggs and take the yolk-sac larvae in their mouth (Ref. 40602).
