Etymology: Cyprinella: Latin, cyprinus = carp (Ref. 45335); galactura: From the words galactos, meaning milk and oura, meaning tail (Ref. 10294).

North America: disjunct range east and west of Former Mississippi Embayment. Cumberland and Tennessee River drainages; upper Savannah and Santee drainages (Atlantic Slope); and upper New River drainage in Virginia; St. Francis and White River drainages in Missouri and Arkansas, USA.
