Etymology: Cyprinella: Latin, cyprinus = carp (Ref. 45335); callistia: From the words callos, meaning beautiful and istia, sail (referring to the iridescent blue-black dorsal fin of the nuptial male) (Ref. 10294).

Inhabit gravel and rubble-bottomed pools and runs of creeks and small to medium rivers (Ref. 5723, 10294). Juveniles and young adults live in quieter waters with less coarse substrates (Ref. 10294). Feed mainly on midge and blackfly larvae (Ref. 10294).
